The Work Behind the Work
Apr 29, 2026
Dear Friend,
When we think about strong nonprofits, we often picture the visible work. Food delivery for older adults, youth mentorship, community health clinics.
But those programs depend on something less visible. Strong systems, effective leadership, and the infrastructure that makes impact possible.
Across Fairfield County, that foundation is under significant strain. Nonprofits are navigating federal funding cuts, declining philanthropy, shifting regulations, rising demand for services, and sustained budget pressure.
As that strain grows, so does the need for support.
This is where Fairfield County’s Community Foundation’s Center for Nonprofit Excellence comes in.
Strengthening the nonprofit sector has long been core to our mission. CNE is how we put that commitment into practice every day.
Building the Capacity of Fairfield County Nonprofits
Like the organizations it serves, CNE continues to evolve in response to changing conditions.
Through our Communities of Practice, we stay closely connected to nonprofit leaders and what they are facing right now. We are hearing about the need to manage stress and prevent burnout, to rethink funding models, and to navigate complex decisions about partnerships, mergers, and shared services.
We are responding with programming that meets this moment.
CNE is providing community resiliency training to help leaders and their teams stay grounded during disruption and return to their work with focus.
We are launching new programming on strategic partnerships, mergers, and shared services. This work helps leaders see these approaches as pathways to sustainability.
We are also working with partners to support nonprofits in using tools such as loans and property donations as part of more flexible, long-term financial strategies.
All told, CNE hosted more than 30 programs that strengthened the skills of more than 400 professionals from nearly 300 Fairfield County nonprofits — helping ensure these talented people feel confident, connected, and supported in their roles as they lead programs that positively affect the lives of individuals and families throughout our region.
How You Can Help
For donors and partners looking to make a meaningful impact, investing in nonprofit capacity building is one of the most effective ways to do so.
These investments create ripple effects far beyond any single program. Strengthening an organization’s infrastructure strengthens everything it delivers, both now and over time.
This is especially important in the current environment. The pressures nonprofits are facing are not short term. Leaders are preparing for difficult realities, including budget reductions, restructuring, and in some cases, layoffs.
Through CNE, we are helping organizations navigate these challenges and emerge stronger, more resilient, and better positioned for the future.
Strong organizations build strong communities. Strong communities ensure that everyone can thrive.
