Brady’s Story: Scholarships Can Do More Than Pay for Tuition

Brady Lewis is a Brooklawn Country Club Caddie Scholar studying at Rutgers University.

Consider what happens when scholarships truly reduce the cost of college.

Brady Lewis knows.

A Bridgeport resident and rising senior studying marketing at Rutgers University, Brady is a Brooklawn Country Club Caddie Scholar, an award made possible by the Fairfield country club through its Community Foundation-managed scholarship fund to support current and past caddies pay for tuition and housing. For Brady, the impact extended well past his bursar bill.

“Honestly, it’s huge,” Brady says. “It means I’m graduating debt-free, which means I get to actually chase a career in golf instead of just picking whatever pays the bills.”

That freedom has already translated into opportunity.

During his college career, Brady was able to pursue employment at the PGA Championship with Summit Golf Brands and complete an internship with Darien-based Arccos Golf, gaining experience in partnerships, customer service, and course mapping while working alongside major companies including Amazon and Twitch.

The scholarship did more than pay for college.

It gave Brady room to visualize and build his future.

Instead of organizing his college years around how to pay the next tuition bill, he was able to seek internships, build professional relationships, explore an industry he loves, and start creating the career he wants.

That is the multiplier effect of scholarship support.

Tuition assistance leads to career experience.

Career experience becomes an opportunity.

Opportunity leads to economic mobility.

That is a pretty good return on generosity.

Talent Is Everywhere. Opportunity Still Isn’t.

Brady first learned about the Brooklawn Country Club Caddie Scholarship while caddying at Sankaty Head Golf Club in Nantucket. He watched older caddies talk about what receiving the scholarship would have meant for their future.

“It lit a fire under me to apply,” he recalls.

But his story also illustrates something philanthropy often does at its best: it creates a chain of opportunity.

Brooklawn Country Club members encouraged him. The Sankaty Head Foundation supported him. Mentors helped him prepare for college, while scholarships removed financial barriers. Employers gave him opportunities to build professional experience.

Each investment was built on the one before it.

Imagine creating more opportunities for students from Fairfield County.

A scholarship can help a student afford tuition. It can also afford opportunities to choose an unpaid research opportunity, take an internship that advances their career rather than a job that covers next month’s bills, pursue studying abroad, stay enrolled during a family financial setback, or graduate with less debt.

Those choices may look small on a financial aid spreadsheet.

Over a lifetime, they can be enormous.
