It’s Our Turn to Show Up for Fairfield County Nonprofits

May 27, 2025

Dear Friend,

A perfect storm is brewing—and Fairfield County’s nonprofits are squarely in its path.

These organizations are no strangers to adversity. But today, the stakes are higher than ever. Government funding cuts, a faltering economy, and looming policy shifts are converging, pushing many nonprofits to the brink—with little relief in sight.

The forecast is bleak.

The Urban Institute estimates that over 70% of Connecticut nonprofits that receive federal funding are at risk of a financial shortfall.

Our own recent survey—reflecting more than 50 Fairfield County’s Community Foundation grantees—revealed alarming trends:

  • Nearly 4 in 5 report declines in fundraising.
  • Roughly 2 in 5 have already lost government funding.
  • Only 1 in 4 have more than 90 days’ worth of reserves.

Without swift intervention, we risk losing trusted community organizations that provide essential services.

That would mean fewer early childhood and after-school programs. It would mean less support for those who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. It would mean fewer health services, particularly for those who rely on Medicaid. And it would mean cuts to many other programs that sustain our region’s vitality.

What can we do about it?

State and local government and institutional philanthropy are part of the solution — but none can close the gap alone, especially as corporate and individual giving also declines.

In response, many nonprofits are adapting. They’re collaborating, sharing resources, and doing more with less. They’re also calling for policy advocacy and increased visibility among funders.

We’re answering that call by:

  • Expanding opportunities for nonprofit collaboration
  • Advocating in Hartford for policies that support our region
  • Raising the visibility of nonprofits to attract new donors

And we need your support.

Now is the time to give—and to give generously. Whether through a gift to the Community Foundation, directly funding your favorite nonprofits, or supporting programming and services from our Center for Nonprofit Excellence, your financial support will enable agile, responsive and resilient responses.

Fairfield County’s nonprofits have always shown up for our community.

Now it’s our turn to show up for them.

In Community,
