Stand Up for Equity and Freedom
May 06, 2022
Women should be in the driver’s seat when it comes to making decisions about their health. This is one of the core values of the Fund for Women & Girls and it’s fundamental to our new signature program, the emme coalition.
That’s why we’re taking the rare step of speaking out about the draft Supreme Court opinion that would strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision. For nearly 50 years, women in Fairfield County and nationwide have had the right to make their own choices about their reproductive health. But if this draft ruling becomes the law of the land, this basic freedom will disappear for millions of women across the country.
While Connecticut codified Roe into law in 1990, women living in states that have not codified Roe will have limited access to safe healthcare. And women with the fewest resources will face the most significant challenges.
We cannot allow this to happen. This is an issue of access. This is an issue of equity. It’s an issue of fairness. It’s an issue of freedom. Now is the time for everyone who stands for these basic ideas to stand up and speak out.
We cannot afford to let someone else take the wheel. Everyone deserves the right to drive their own decisions — especially when it comes to their families and their health.
