Welcoming Our New FWG Spring 2025 Steering Committee Members

We’re excited to welcome three outstanding leaders to the Fund for Women & Girls Spring 2025 Steering Committee. Annie Hughes, Dr. Kate McCarthy and Mary Sullivan bring a wealth of experience, fresh perspectives and deep commitment to our mission.

Annie Hughes

Annie Hughes is the President of Type A Strategies and a seasoned fundraising and operations consultant with over 20 years of experience. She partners with organizations at the intersection of marketing and fundraising to expand their supporter base through diverse strategies, including major donor cultivation, foundation and corporate giving, online and offline direct marketing, direct mail, and high-impact fundraising events. Beyond revenue growth, Annie helps her clients strengthen and streamline their internal operations to maximize effectiveness.

Previously, Annie served as Vice President of Client Services at Chapman Cubine Adams and Hussey, a full-service direct marketing firm. She also held senior roles as Director of Client Services at OMP, Inc. and in the Major Gifts department at EMILY’s List during the 2004 election cycle. In 2008, she was National Deputy Director of Operations for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

A Wisconsin native, Annie grew up in the Milwaukee area and graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She now resides in Darien, Connecticut, with her husband, Brian Heindl, and their sons, Hugh and George.

Dr. Kate McCarthy

Katharine (Kate) McCarthy, PhD, MPH, is an epidemiologist and Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Kate also co-director the Women’s Health Division in the Department of Population Health and Health Policy. Her research focuses on lifecourse drivers of adverse cardiometabolic and maternal health outcomes. Kate is principal investigator on a project funded by the National Institutes of Health to identify school policy levers to promote positive cardiovascular trajectories in adolescence and reduce later life pregnancy complications. Kate also co-leads a youth empowerment program funded Helen Gurley Brown Foundation which provides adolescents from low-resourced neighborhoods with mentorship, skill building and social support to pursue careers in science, medicine and community health. Previously, Kate was a research associate at the Population Council, where she supported global research projects related to the measurement of essential maternal and newborn health interventions and supported the design and evaluation of adolescent empowerment programs in resource poor settings. Kate grew up in Connecticut and later moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina with her family. After attending Emory University for her undergraduate degree, she completed her MPH at Columbia University and her PhD at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy. Kate currently lives in Darien, CT with her husband Will and her daughters Fiona and Tess.

Mary Sullivan

Mary Sullivan, LCSW is in private practice at the Cos Cob Counseling Center. As a committed mental health practitioner who specializes in bereavement and anxiety, Mary is also very passionate about promoting equity and opportunity for all of the residents in Fairfield County. After graduating from the University of St. Joseph with a BSW, and Fordham University with an MSW, Mary has spent much of her career in the field of social work and mental health. Over the last 27 years, she has worked with grieving individuals and families, teenage parents, Head Start families and her many private clients. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, traveling, live music, and visiting with family and friends.
